Information on Admission
Information offered in these pages is selective. Applicants should obtain official documents in Japanese providing a detailed account of admission. A full list of entrance examination requirements is available in Japanese only.
I. Requirements for Admission
Foreign students will be enrolled in one of the following four programs of the Faculty of Arts and Letters/Graduate School of Arts and Letters, Tohoku University.
1. Graduate Program
A. Two-year Master's Program
Students who have completed sixteen years of formal education may apply for admission to this program. If you have any further inquiries, please contact the office of Graduate School of Arts and Letters, Tohoku University.

B. Three-year Doctoral Program
Admission to this program is limited to those who have obtained a degree equivalent to a master's degree conferred in universities in Japan.

2. Undergraduate Program
Admission through examination into the third year class is carried out at the Faculty of Arts and Letters, Tohoku University.
Those who have completed 12 years of schooling abroad.

3. Research Student Program
This is basically a non-degree program open to those students who intend to engage in the study of a particular subject. Research students are classified into the following categories:
- Undergraduate Research Students
- Graduate Research Students
- 1. Undergraduate Research Students
- Those who have completed 16 years of schooling in a foreign country
- 2. Graduate Research Students
- Admission is limited to those who have a completed a course at foreign institutions which is equivalent to the master's degree program in Japan.
Relevant materials on educational history should be submitted when applying to take the entrance examination.
At the Tohoku University Graduate School of Arts and Letters, visa application can only be made by the individual applicant in person. Please be careful of this requirement.
Application for research student is distributed, when obtaining professor's consent of your admission.

4. Special Auditing Students and Special Research Students
As a rule, students must be affiliated with another university and admission requests are handled by agreements between departments of the universities or between the universities themselves.
II. Tuition and Fee
1. Entrance Examination Fee, Admission Fee and Tuition
Students have to pay an entrance examination fee at the time of application, and an admission fee at the time of registration. The tuition is payable in full at the time of admission in two installments at each semester. The amount of these fees varies according to the status.
2. Remitted Tuition Fee and Other Fees
Student may be partially or totally exempt from tuition and admission fee when their circumstances make the payment of these fees difficult or impossible. Research students and auditors are excluded from the benefit of remitted school fees.
