@In 1923, Faculty of Law and Arts was established at Tohoku
University. Since Dr. Sadakichi Kita took office in the following year, the
archaeological study has continued. In 1925, Institute of Historical Research
of Northern Japan was founded and the collection and study of abundant
archaeological materials started. In 1957, Laboratoy of Archaeology was founded
in Faculty of Arts and Letters. Prof. Nobuo Ito, who had come from Daini Senior
High School was in charge of Department of Archaeology. Since then, until 1971
Prof. Ito excavated important sites of prehistoric and historic times in Tohoku
DistrictF Soyama shell midden in Miyagi prefecture, Mutsu Kokubunji temple
site, Mutsu Kokubunniji temple site in Sendai City, Tareyanagi site in Aomori
prefecture, Tagajo temple site, Tagajo fort site, Numazu shell midden,
Sanno-gakoi site in Miyagi prefecture, Aizu Otsukayama burial mound in
Fukushima prefecture, Seno site in Aomori prefecture and so on. He carried out
outstanding, pioneering achievements.
@In 1964, Prof. Chosuke Serizawa arrived at his post of Archaeology of Tohoku
University. He excavated a lot of major palaeolithic sites: Sozudai site in
Oita prefecture, Fukui Cave in Nagasaki prefecture, Hoshino site in Tochigi
prefecture, Iwajuku site in Gunma prefecture, Iwato site in Oita prefecture,
Nakabayashi site and Tazawa site in Niigata prefecture and so on. He has led
Palaeolithic study in Japan.
@In 1978, Takashi Suto was appointed at the Archaeology Department. Since then,
he continued excavation and researches of important Prehistoric and Ancient
sites : Boryo site in Fukushima prefecture, Nakasawame shell midden in Miyagi
prefecture, Maeda site and Nakagami site in Iwate prefecture, Sanno-gakoi site
in Miyagi prefecture and so on.
@In 1990, Kaoru Akoshima joined in the Department. He takes part in the study
of Palaeolithic culture.
@Currently, under the direction of Professor emeritus Chosuke Serizawa,
professor Suto and professor Akoshima, analysis of microblade industry of Araya
site in Niigata prefecture is in progress.
@In 2009, Yoshitaka Kanomata joined in the Department.
