Contents: Lectures on family issues in contemporary Japanese society. The lectures will be based on sociology and related fields: law, economics, population studies, and so on. Topics will be as follows: analysis of kinship, form and institution of the family, marraige and divorce, childbirth and childrearing, lifecourse and the family, population change and the family change.

Title: Basics of Academic Writing

Contents: An academic paper, such as a term paper or bachelor's thesis, must fulfill some requirements. (1) It must be based on facts and logics. (2) Sections and paragraphs must be arranged with well-structured organization. (3) Descriptions must be correct and can hardly be misunderstood. (4) Author's opinions must be distinguished from findings of others' works. (5) The author must give appropriate citations. In this class students learn rules and techniques for academic writing through writing term papers. Main topics are the following:

Topics will be as follows: labor statistics, employment law and policies, internal and external labor market, career and lifecourse, social stratification and social mobility, and gender and work. Students write a term paper based on the theme of their own interest.
