Contents: Lecture on family issues in contemporary Japanese society based on sociology and related fields: law, economics, population studies, and so on. Topics will be as follows: analysis of kinship, form and institution of the family, marriage and divorce, childbirth and childrearing, lifecourse and the family, population change and the family change.
Learning Goals: (1) To understand basic concepts and theories of family research; (2) To learn the current conditions of families in contemporary Japan based on empirical data
Grading Plan: Based on submitted assignments (65%) and the term paper (35%)

Contents: Students are required to select books, read them, and make discussion with the teacher about the content of the books. A student and the teacher hold a session basically every two weeks. The day and the time of the session is arranged for each student.

Title: Basics of Academic Writing

Contents: An academic paper, such as a term paper or bachelor's thesis, must meet the following requirements. (1) It must be based on facts and logics. (2) Sections and paragraphs must be arranged with well-structured organization. (3) Descriptions must be correct and can hardly be misunderstood. (4) Author's opinions must be distinguished from findings by others' works. (5) The author must give appropriate citations. In this course, students learn rules and techniques for academic writing. Students also learn how to comment other's writing through peer-response activities.

Contents: This course is an introductory course for statistical analysis. Using a statistical package application, students learn basic concepts and methods such as crosstabulation, comparison of means between two groups, and statistical test.

Learning Goals: (1) To learn how to search, get, and read papers; (2) To acquire skills in visual presentation and discussion.
