Application Guide for Non-Degree Research Students and Others

Enrolling as a Research Student
(for Japanese applicants)

Those wishing to study a specific research subject may undergo a selection process to be admitted as a non-degree research student, provided there are no other obstacles.
Before submitting documents for screening the applicant must obtain approval for admission from his or her prospective academic advisor (the advisor must sign the approval section of the application form).

Enrolling as a Research Student
(for non-Japanese applicants)

Non-graduate research students study a specific research subject under the supervision of an academic advisor without obtaining a degree or qualification. An applicant must undergo a selection process to be admitted to an undergraduate or graduate school, provided there are no other obstacles. Please note that due to the nature of this program you will not earn credits for the courses you attend.
In order to be eligible for admission as an undergraduate research student, an applicant must have graduated from a university (4 years) or a junior college (2 years) with a major in a field related to his or her prospective research subject. In order to be eligible as a graduate research student, an applicant must have a Master's degree in a field related to his or her prospective research subject.
The applicant must also obtain an approval for admission from his or her prospective academic advisor (the advisor must sign the approval section of the application form). Contacts for the faculty members can be found under the third link below.

Enrolling as a Non-Degree Student

A person who wishes to complete a course on a specific subject without obtaining an academic degree may undergo a selection process to be admitted as a non-degree student, provided there are no other obstacles.
The instructor's approval must be obtained before applying for a reading course, a seminar, or a field course. Selected courses cannot be changed after the application has been submitted. Please confirm that the courses you intend to attend are included in the "List of Courses" for the corresponding academic year before applying. If the "List of Courses" is not yet available, please contact the Academic Affairs Department.

Enrolling as a Special Research or
Special Auditing Student

A student enrolled in another educational institution who wishes to complete a certain course or courses or receive research guidance from one of the faculty members of Tohoku University Graduate School/Faculty of Arts and Letters may be admitted as a special research or special auditing student under an agreement between Tohoku University and the other educational institution.

Enrolling as a Short-term Visiting Trainee

A short-term visiting trainee is an international student admitted to one of the departments of Tohoku University Graduate School/Faculty of Arts and Letters under an interinstitutional agreement with the aim of training, gaining cross-cultural experience, and studying language for a period of 3 days to 3 months.
