Site Management Policy

Website Contents

This site was originally created in 1995 with the purpose of making information about educational and research activities of the Tohoku University Graduate School/Faculty of Arts and Letters accessible to the public. The contents of the website are currently managed and operated by the Graduate School of Arts and Letters Public Relations Office, with technical support provided by the Website Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Letters. Contents of the individual web pages of the departments and faculty members/staff are provided and managed by those departments and faculty members/staff, respectively.

Keeping essential information up to date is our main priority. Efforts are made to maintain data accuracy, but we would like you to take it into account that some inadvertent errors might occur. It is also our policy to quickly make updates with reference to rules revision, system restructuring, or personnel changes. However, occasionally time is required to update these types of information. Some pages might contain digitized printed materials that were valid at the time of publication, but are no longer relevant.
We intend to preserve materials published on this site to the extent possible.

Accessibility and Usability

This site is designed to be accessible to the broadest range of users, with the following guidelines followed from the time it was launched.

1. Main data must be displayed in HTML format.
2. PDF format may be used only when it is necessary to present data in a printable form. File formats that require a specific application or plugin should be avoided whenever possible.
3. All HTML codes on this site must conform to W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standards.
4. File size and web page size must be kept within sensible limits.
5. Site directory structure must be kept as simple as possible.
6. Each page must contain links to the site's home page, the parent page and all directly related pages. Measures must be taken to avoid broken links, links to pages under construction, or nonexistent pages.
7. In general, file names and site directory structure should not be altered. In cases when changes are absolutely necessary, server-side redirect must be used to make the file/page accessible via the old URL.
8. A correct URL address, the date of the last update, and copyright information must be displayed on every page. Each page must provide complete and consistent information.
9. The site must have consistent design and navigation.
10. Character size and window size should not be fixed. Limitations on individual web page display settings must be minimized.
11. The site must be adaptable to a wide range of browsing environments (including the type of connection, browser used, and the physical condition of the user).

In general, all website modifications (such as addition or replacement of files) are conducted under the following principles.

1. All documents must follow HTML 4.01 Strict and CSS2 specifications.
2. All pages except the home page must use the same external style sheet.
3. Web tools like Infoaxia Web Accessibility Toolboxmust be used to ensure the accessibility of the site.

As of now, certain aspects of the site design still do not fully conform to the standards established in Web Accessibility Initiative（WAI） Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) by Japan Ministry of Internal Affairs and in Communications' "Guidelines for older persons and persons with disabilities - Information and communications equipment, software and services - Part 3: Web content" (JIS X 8341-3). However, further development of this site will correct these oversights and follow WAI directions.
