The International Graduate Program in Japanese Studies at Tohoku University, Japan, is pleased to announce a call for submissions for the First Tohoku Conference on Global Japanese Studies. The conference aims to provide, for scholars of Japan from a range of ages, nationalities and disciplines, an opportunity to exchange ideas, thus fostering the possibility of further collaboration.

Conference Topic

The Meiji Restoration Revisited: Culture, Religion, and the State

The Meiji Restoration of 1868 has been studied primarily from a political perspective. But this major event also made new forms of knowledge, thinking, and representation widely available, and brought new religious, cultural, and linguistic transformations, changing once and for all the way the inhabitants of the Japanese islands understood themselves in a global context. These changes of 1868 also brought wide-ranging effects in Asia and the rest of the world. On the occasion of the 150^th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration, this conference aims to reconsider the Meiji Restoration from a cultural perspective, and to think about the intersections between on the one hand cultural and religious changes, and political and legal on the other, while trying to find its place in the overall context of global history.

 

Submissions are, however, not limited to the above-mentioned topic. Working sessions will also be held in parallel with the topic sessions, concerning broader issues related to Japan in various fields of humanities and social sciences. One of the workig groups will focus on Japanese Society and its Challenges-Historical Background and Perspectives. We especially welcome submissions from young scholars and graduate students.
